Art Everywhere Proposal

Nothing like cutting it until the last minute, but Ashley and I officially submitted a proposal to be in the Art Everywhere show on Granby Street in Norfolk. Read more about it here. Granted pretty impressive that we made the deadline considering I just found out about it yesterday. Hopefully the proposal I made up is detailed enough. We get the results on the 14th. So only four days of waiting. It is a really great opportunity if we get picked though.

Furniture Hunting: Round 1

Yesterday I was off work and Janet and I went to a few thrift stores, continuing our hunt for great furniture finds. We didn't have much luck but I did find a new dunny shelf for only $2.98. Pretty happy about it. Sorry I do not have a photo of it.

After going to around 3 thrift stores and finding things a little overpriced we decided to check out some furniture stores to get some ideas for my soon to be living room. Surprisingly we did not see a whole lot that we liked. Room Store I think had the most stuff I liked and wasn't horribly expensive. We also checked out Haverty's, Haynes, Overstock Furniture, and Lazy Boy. Here are our finds:

I love the cottagey feel of this coffee table, plus the storage is an added bonus.

Not crazy about the fabric on this chair but it does both swivel and rock back and forth!

Love this couch! Long enough for Zach and still pretty narrow.

We need some little side chairs since we can't fit more than one couch, these are both small and cute!

I like this but it may be too oversized for our house...would look pretty nice though, our TV would fill up the entire TV opening.

Another side chair option. Yes, they are the same chair, just different colors.

Kitchen Inspiration

ur official closing date for Zach and I's new house is the 26th! So I have begun planning for our kitchen. Now this is what is there currently (ignore all the STUFF, because that will be gone when we move in) However we do get all the appliances!

The countertops are currently white, notice the corner counter is different (small tile) vs. the laminate on the other countertop. It also drives me crazy that the backsplash is only on the wall behind the sink and not behind the range. Not that I am a fan of the checker boardish backsplash.There is also a white tile on the floor.

Now I was planning on replacing the backsplash tile myself (with the help of my mom and probably Joni and whoever else wants to chip in!). I had planned on buying sheets of blue and green colored glass. Then cutting the glass into 1 inch wide strips.and placing them vertically on the wall. My mom, Joni, and Grandma have all done this at their houses. However they did triangles, probably because triangles are easier! Theirs are also not really color specific like mine will be. Here are the best shots I could find... I know, not great.

                                     

                                     

I thought this kind of had a similar idea colorwise to what I am thinking of, though mine will be more blue and green. And obviously not squares.

                                     

The cabinets now as you can see above are a light grey. I am going to paint them white. I was also planning a light seafoamy green wall. So with everything light I figured the counters should be dark. Like black/dark grey. I mentioned this to Zach and he vetoed it. I just think he needs to see it. I am not sure if he can visualize it. So I have been hunting for images of white kitchen cabinets and black counters. Granted ours will not be nearly as fancy as any of these, and our counters will be laminate, not marble or granite.

                                        

Maybe after seeing these pictures he will have a change of heart? And share my vision? I think the dark counters would compliment our appliances well. So that they aren't the ONLY dark things in the room.

More Thrift Store Gems

Here are Janet and I's great thrift store finds from this weekend. We got this dresser below for $9.98! Which is very 50's. I plan on painting it white, replacing the top of it which is a formica counter top with some wood, and replacing the feet/legs on the bottom it will look WAY better. I will probably use it as a TV console for our smaller tv which will go in the converted garage room.

This is DEFINATELY my favorite thing we found. I just think this hutch is awesome. I can store books or whatever in it and it even has a drawer beneath the cabinet. I even like the color. The top is a little beat up and needs to be sanded and repainted and there is a messed up spot on the side. I will probably save this one for last since it isn't too bad to begin with. But I think I will eventually color match it and then just do the repairs so that I am not refinishing the entire thing. Did I mention we snagged this for only $34.98??

The last thing we found is a little end table. which I love that it has the cubby spot, perfect for me to put a basket of knitting stuff in or even some books. I think I will paint this one white as well then paint the inside of the cubby an accent color. Of course I will replace the hardware too.

Currently Zach and I's garage is taken over with the table and chairs so Janet is storing the two big things at her house until we move. I am off work Wednesday so maybe I will get to work on some furniture refinishing and get a suntan while I am at it! Very happy with these though, that is for sure!

car full o' paintings!

Jessica and I spent a good long time photographing all my art last night! But it is complete, and I can't thank her enough for helping me get a real portfolio together!

Now I need to return all these paintings to their owners. I am sure their walls are looking sad without my paintings on them!

Dinner is served

So for dinner I made some Parmesan and Romano cheese rice with asparagus sauted in butter and garlic, as well as shrimp marinated in olive oil and itallian seasoning then sauted with garlic. It was pretty good!
